CP could be administered as a secondary rather than a direct result for some misdemeanour. It’s been mentioned here several times if set lines, were given detention, some pupils simply wouldn’t comply.
My co-ed school, was typical of many schools, a pupil failing to do a punishment without good reason would usually receive some form of CP, this applied to both girls and boys, in effect this allowed pupils to manipulate to a degree the chose of punishment to suit if so desired, one punishment cancelled and replaced.
Although caning was generally seen the more severe, especially by girls as it was upping the anti from the usual non-caning punishments, some regarded this the more favoured or quicker option, It could be viewed that a pupil was in fact being caned for the lesser offence of failing to do a punishment, the original offence left unpunished.
