At boarding school, the Head played a different tactic; any caning offence was always followed with an automatic two-week gating, regardless, a reflection period as it was kindly referred.

If the caning was by way of failing to comply with a previous punishment the original punishment stood and ran consecutively. Accumulative offences were dealt with on individual merit. This meant you could be awarded lines, gating and caning in one hit, excuse the pun, had I not walked across a piece of forbidden lawn, and spotted, my drinking fiasco may not have come to the fore. I received lines for breaking the grass rule, and was caned and gated for drinking,
