Corporal punishment was a regular feature in both schools but was undoubtedly more common in the primary school. Implements used varied from the wooden ruler, for infants, up to the leather strap or cane. It was applied equally to boys and girls. In secondary school, the only instrument I can only remember being used was the cane and then it was more often used on boys than girls.
In all cases whether ruler strap or cane, corporal punishment was applied to the palm of the hands and almost always in even numbers of strokes, i.e. 2 4 6 or (very exceptionally ) 8. There may have been occasion, especially in the infant classes, where only one slap was given but my memory is hazy on this.
