I went to school in County Offaly in Ireland during the 60s and 70s. I have experience in both National Primary and the Christian Brothers Secondary Schools.
I also went to school in the Birkenhead area in England for 2 years between the ages of 13 and 15 because we went to England in connection with my Fathers’s work in the Car plant at Ellesmere Port before returning to Ireland for my final 3 years to get the Senior Leaving certificate.
So I has experience of schools on both sides of the water.
The primary school in Ireland had both boys and girls in mixed classes, this is usual over here.

Punishments apart fro lines na being kept in were reinforced by use of the cane and strap for both sexes. It was a daily occurrence for boys but girls also got it every now and then if they failed to respond to other methods.
