Irish & British Corporal Punishment Experiences Compared7

Mostly given on the hands in class was the punishment Leather or as you would say strap. Some teachers would use a cane as their preference, this was given on both hands and bottom.
I did not know what punishment was though until I went to the Christian Brothers school. The teachers there were mainly Priests and stood for no nonsense. A longer thicker leather was used on both hands and bottoms for even minor errors and disobedience. Up to 6 on each hand in class or if sent to the Headmaster up to 12 on the bottom. Both punishments were given severely and ye would be unable to write or sit for the rest of that day.
It was a relief to go to England but even there straps and canes were used. A new thing to me was the slipper, given in class to both boys and girls. The strap and cane were mainly given by the headmaster or senior female teacher for the girls.
