I think the discipline was most effective in matters of work.
ie handing in homework on time, and getting things right.
It created the atmosphere that these things MATTERED.
Nowadays they do not seem to which is why degrees etc are so undervalued.
As regards discipline controlling behaviour I am less certain.
Kids will dare each other and not care for the consequences good or bad.
