Mrs Castley was head mistress at the time I started school and if she was cross with you (SOMETIMES FOR A VERY MINOR THING) she would stand you on the stage at assembly and slap your legs hard and fast till she was out of breath.

I too remember girls being made to stand on stage while she slapped their legs. Gosh imagine that!

She was in my class and I remember her hiding in a cupboard in the class room and refusing to come out even when the teacher was banging on the door for her to open it.
