Corporal punishment at school in the UK was finally outlawed I think in the late 80s/early 90s, in the state sector, and in the private sector, in response to pressure from the European Union, by the late 90s. At my secondary school it was known that you could get it – for boys the cane from the headmaster, for girls the slipper from the senior mistress, and it was known that it would be on the (clothed) bottom – but in practice, I hardly remember hearing about anyone getting it.
