By the time we walked up the front path, we were fighting furiously, and just as we got to the front door, Carla enraged me so much that I hit her. She screamed so loud, I was surprised people didn’t come from all over the neighbourhood to see who was being murdered, but in the event it was just Mum who came flying down the stairs. While I stood there, sobbing, Carla told Mum everything. One look at her face was enough for me to know what was going to happen. She grabbed me by the shoulder and half dragged me up the stairs to my bedroom. She left me for a moment to go and get the hairbrush from her room, at which point I made things even worse by trying to run away.
