In the days of my childhood, my parents smacked me first, and asked questions later. In my case whenever I was out with my mother and a child was misbehaving, my mother would point out how the child was drawing attention to itself and how good an well behaved I was. A little praise went a long way with me because I tried to please my parents by being well-behaved.
