3) Vietnam is not exactly a model of democracy, so there’s little chance of the pupils being able to make their concerns known within their own borders. It may be that they want the world to see what is happening, and hope that something will be done. From my conversations with Vietnamese women (the men would not talk about it), it would seem that the teachers believe this is the best way to keep order in the classroom. Corporal punishment (usually with a cane) is very common in the home in Vietnam in particular. One woman I met many years ago told me that her father kept a stingray tail, which he used as a whip
