Ruler smacks, feather duster whacks, and standing on your chair!! My, my, my those Aussie Catholics were creative in making children’s school experience a misery. In the U.S. in my area back in ’58, the nuns were more apt to have you kneel in the corner for an hour (sometimes on pebbles) or bang your head against another child’s or the chalkboard. A ruler whack might happen but it was less common and more controlled. Ahhhh….such wonderful memories of the good sisters. In high school, the Brothers were more organized with procedures more like your Aussie Independent Schools where the strap was the weapon of choice.
