I went to a Prep school in the late ’60s when caning was the accepted norm. The Headmaster ruled by fear as well as the cane; he was the only one to cane boys and every other day some chaps name was read out(sometimes many)at assembly to report to his study afterward. This meant bending over for the cane and more often than not the headmaster would leave his door open so everyone could hear the strokes; it was not a large building. Later on, in my school career, I went on to a Public school where again caning was commonplace, either by the Headmaster or by the various Housemasters,
