I don’t know what it was like at your schools, but at mine you were conditioned from an early age to respect and obey. The bell rang at the end of break, you stood motionless and silent, it rang again and you filed off to your next lesson. You lined up outside the classroom. You stood when an adult entered the room. You addressed adults as sir, miss or missus. And you bent over when instructed.
Had I been in a group, and someone refused, I may well have chanced my arm and supported them. On my own, maybe I am weak, but once told I was going to be caned, I was effectively resigned to my fate.
