There was a lad at my oikish comprehensive who had previously been to private boarding school I don’t know if he’d been expelled, or if his parents had run out of money There had been a lot more caning at the private school than there ever was at the comp He said that a lad had been sent to the house master for smoking — three whacks. The teacher asked him what he had on under his trousers. “just pants” replied the boy. the teacher checked and he had actually put on a pair of thick swimming trunks. the housemaster said “very well: you can have three for smoking, plus six for lying” “nine whacks of the cane?” said i, very impressed “oh, not all at once” said the boy who was telling the story. i never found out the details, but I assume he got his 3 here and then but had to come back the next day for his 6. does that sound like 2 installments?
