i also remember one time when a boy at my school was hauled up in front of assembly for moderately serious vandalism (he’d deliberately driven his bike, after hours, over the cricket pitch!) he was told to leave the assembly hall and go an wait in the year heads classroom “I’ll be along in a few minutes to whack you so hard and so many times that it is perfectly possible that you won’t be able to sit down for the rest of the day” the boy looked rather crestfallen but the deputy head said “and when mr — has finished with you, please come along to my study” we all thought that that meant that he would be slippered by the head of year, and then caned by the deputy a few minutes later. i never found out if that was wht happneed, or not. not so much whacked in installments as two whackings in one
