I don’t want to deny the validity of anyone else’s experience, though, because I imagine that I would have come back even after graduation if I’d been told to, but this was in the 60s and it was nuns who’d have been telling me to, and I really did have enough fear of them that I’d probably have obeyed.
One thing, though, about “installments” is that a U.S. girl of my generation, at least a Catholic girl, would usually get smacked around at home for any trouble she got into at school, and it was best to tell on ourselves because our folks usually found out anyway (and you might get it worse if you didn’t ‘fess up from the beginning). So we did have a second “installment” of sorts to look forward to at home.
