I cannot recall the exact details now, but some years ago there was a case before the courts, in Sydney I think, involving a doctor who was claiming damages for having been caned with six strokes twice in the one day at his old school.
I did not think that it was going to achieve anything for the doc, but in actual fact it did.
I believe that it was ruled that this punishment was excessive, and in breach of the standards acceptable in schools in that era.
The doctor’s claim to physical abuse and mental anguish, not to mention severe psychological damage,was upheld.
