During my schooling, I was caned five times and the closest I came to receiving the cane on purpose was for not attending a set lunchtime detention, not because I wanted to be caned but because I wanted to play football. I was summoned to the Headmaster’s office after lunch and I received 6 strokes of the cane for my punishment. My friends did not have an official “caning league” but we took some pride if we received it. My younger brother saw the cane marks on my buttocks that evening and it worried him because he was due at my school the following year.
