And at the (day) grammar school where more than forty years ago I did some teaching practice, the senior prefects still had the power to beat. It was a direct grant and quite traditional and I wasn’t totally clear how “official” the power to slipper really was – but it happened. And in its most absurd form, there was a choice at the end of the school day of a very long path around the grounds to where the bus stops were, or a short cut across the fields and through a gap in the hedge.
