I recall, in a very traditional grammar school in the 1960s, there were a few boys who took a sort of pride in having cane marks across their bums.
But one specific case was the Maths. teacher, nick-named ‘Cloddy’. He used to give detentions for not producing homework. If you didn’t attend, he had a 2-hour detention.
