In schools where slipperings were regularly and routinely given out in front of the class, and even became expected by everyone, tears would be less likely than in those schools in which they were rare events. Imagine a scenario in which a girl may have only ever witnessed one or two slipperings previously over the years she had been at the school, and only ever to boys, suddenly being called out to the front and told to bend over by the teacher as he reached for his slipper. I would certainly expect such a girl to cry in those circumstances.
