It wasn’t only the pain of a slippering that could determine whether a girl would cry or not. The atmosphere could be an even greater determining factor. If the right atmosphere was there, girls would sometimes start crying before the first whack was delivered. The preparation and the positioning of the girl and the prolonging of that process could make tears more likely. A_L, that girl, Jennifer, who was slippered at your school during a PT lesson, was a very brave girl indeed. She didn’t start crying until the slippering actually began, but the ordeal that man put her through while preparing her would, I am sure, have reduced most girls, and even many boys, of that age to tears.
