As I mentioned in my previous post in this thread, many of the slipperings given in full view of the class were very quick and comparitively minor in severity. Just one whack of the slipper was common for such open punishments. A teacher may have been addressing the class when he suddenly noticed a girl inattentively gazing out of the window. He would rush over to her and it might be something like:
“Christine, you are not paying attention again. Stand up. Rest your hands on your desk.”
“Whack!”
“Sit down! Now, as I was saying, in the summer of 1644, as Cromwell was preparing his Roundheads for the battle of Marston Moor…..”
I can’t imagine many boys being turned on by that.
