I remember the tears, and some verbal reactions, but not the other post punishment strategies you mention. Too much time elapsed maybe!

More serious offences brought three or even four strokes, and that would nearly always result in verbal reactions and at least some tears, even in the top class, and even with boys. You say you don’t recall seeing any girls cry, and only a couple of boys. Maybe your contemporaries were tougher than us, maybe our teachers hit harder, who knows? I’m happy to say I only got the slipper once, one fairly light stroke, together with several other lads and no tears on that occasion!
