I remember one particular “red face” incident in my second year at grammar school. Our latin teacher (there you are, A_L!) was a cheerful young chap who was pretty good at chalk-throwing, and also handed out detentions and, now and again, the slipper. The lad sitting next to me had committed some misdemeanour, and was called out to the front and told to bend over while the slipper was retrieved.
