It was a genuine old (1950s) white plimsoll with a hard thin rubber sole which was quite flexible. It had the most amazing sting and the guy applying it was very skilled and “serious”. I really did yell after each stroke(no play acting) and was genuinely hoping at the end that there were not many more whacks to go! I suppose what I am saying in a rambling way is that adult experience is not just about curiosity but also about re-lived experience.
