That’s my argument against exempting girls from CP in schools where it’s used for boys. It not only guarantees some girls will never get what they need, it also introduces the problems caused by injustice. I might have done reasonably well in a school that didn’t have CP at all so long as I was treated fairly. I would not have done well at all in a sexist school (one where only girls were exempt from CP) because I would have been treated unfairly from day one and constantly thereafter.
You’re right – banning corporal punishment for girls will guarantee some never get what they need. I’ve never denied that. I’ve just said that sometimes that, less than ideal than solution, may nonetheless be the best possible solution available. Just as I’ve said today, that there are circumstances in which I’d support abolition of corporal punishment – but only in cases where circumstances mean a better solution isn’t possible,
