there’s a difference between corporal punishment and a detention – and that is, that once the cane is given, it can’t be taken back – and as it is desirable in most cases that it is administered in as timely a fashion as possible, that means any appeals process has to be quick. Detentions, by their nature, are time delayed.

We do have procedures in place if a child feels a detention is unfair, but they are less formal because they can be. A child who feels they have been unfairly treated in any way should first of all see their Home Room teacher (if they are in the junior forms) or their Tutor (if they are in the senior forms). If these people are unavailable, or involved in the dispute they have a number of other options – House Master/Mistress, Form Master/Mistress, or their Deputies.
