I don’t want to give the impression that this was a school out of Dickens’s time, with sadistic teachers flogging the girls. Nothing could be further from the case. It was a friendly school with high academic achievement and very caring staff. In the 60’s schools and especially boarding schools were very different from today. Discipline was much stricter and the use of corporal punishment in the home as well as at school was much more common. Rules were there to be obeyed and if you disobeyed them you suffered the consequences. At least you knew where you were.

The most common types of punishment were lines, detentions on half-day holidays, picking up litter from the school grounds, and runs round the playing fields. As I explained earlier there were also the order marks. These could be given on their own, for minor matters, or in addition to other punishments.
