My heart goes out to Susan Evans in your post above. I think that the fact that all punishments in my own Infant and Junior school days were in public in front of my own or another mixed class was what decided me to be a good little lad and try to avoid receiving school CP at all costs. I don’t think it was the pain, as in later life doctors have told me on more than one occasion that I’ve got a higher pain threshold than’s good for me. No, it was the embarrassment beyond a doubt. Being a powerless and unwilling actor in a highly choreographed public ritual sacrifice to the gods of good order and discipline definitely wasn’t for me. However, I was always happy to be in the audience to appreciate the performance of those fellow scholars who did find themselves motivated by Thespian inclinations!
