For some reason tawses seem to have inspired far more creativity dedicated to the cause of inflicting pain than, for instance, canes. The various combinations of shape, colour, size, weight, stiffness and number of ‘fingers’ or ‘tails’ seem almost infinite, and they were mainly hand-crafted, the manufacturers taking considerable pride in their work. I wouldn’t regard the Scots as a particularly cruel race, but when it came to beating their children in school they seem to have had what was almost a national obsession that it should be done as often as possible, as painfully as possible, and with craftsman made instruments exactly tailored to the requirements of the job!
