Since I was something of a teacher’s pet, I along with another goody-goody, was sometimes asked to tidy a large stationary cupboard. Archive material was also stored there, and one day we found some punishment books from previous years. I was sickened by what I saw. The details inscribed were: the offender’s name and age; the offense they had committed; the number of strokes given and the part of the body to which they were administered. One entry read two strokes and smacking. The names of some pupils were written several times. Corporal punishment had not changed their behavior.
We assumed that, apart from the one instance of a smacking, only canings were entered. Does anyone know of slipperings being recorded in a punishment book?
