This was often in direct contrast to some boys who would return to class after having been given the cane (which was recorded officially), they sometimes were smiling smugly to the rest of the class as though it hadn’t hurt at all. I was quite annoyed when this happened as I had always believed that the cane was more severe. Later on in senior school I did find out that the cane was more severe, especially if it was given in front of the class.
