Certainly in my area, parents prior to 1960, not only accepted but expected me to administer punishment on the bare bottom. I do not know what took place in a local mixed school at this time for certain only what I was old. This is a junior school. The head was a male. Boys and girls were slippered up to top juniors and were required to take it bare. However, while this continued for the boys in the top junior years, girls were given the strap on their hands instead of the slipper and caned on the hands rather than the bottom.
