So at this changeover period, we see minor offenses, eg. not wearing a cap, attract 1 stroke, this would obviously have been dealt with ‘unofficially’ before. Soon after the new system kicks in the minor offenses disappear as do one-stroke canings, because, presumably these misdemeanors are now dealt with in different ways (eg in my day 100 lines).
There is a clear reflection of societal expectations found in the pages too. in the 50’s there actually is an entry fro ‘disrespect to the monarchy’ which attracted 6 of the best! Later , in the late 60s and 70’s the entry under which my first caning was recorded ‘general attitude’ became prevalent, previously offenses had tended to be more specific.
