This I guess coincided with the rise of disrespect and rebellion in student society as a whole. As contributors have mentioned here before some of us were simultaneously being caned and demonstrating against the Vietnam War. The old boundaries of ‘respect’ ( in the hidebound sense of the word) were being broken down, and it is noticeable that this type of offense was common amongst the ‘academic ‘ stream once they again became eligible for the cane following the ‘interregnum ‘ of caning the brightest., This possibly indicates rebellion was as much cerebral as physical!
