I remain very troubled by the caning of hands. The risk of serious injury must be very high unless the cane is small and very light compared to that that can be used safely on the buttocks. Perhaps the apparent increase in number of strokes over time reflects a change in the size of the cane? A lighter less devastating cane might have been used more freely.
