I never asked other boys if they had asked the Head for a caning since I was a very shy wee lad in junior school and the whole concept of corporal punishment was extremely embarrassing for me even then. I lived in the constant fear that she would discover my cowardice and have the Headmaster cane me in front of the whole school which, believe it or not, did happen to some delinquents on occasion!
To this day I don’t know if she fully intended that we ask the Headmaster to cane us or if she thought we’d been caned when we returned …. too late to ask her now!
