When in Secondary school we were taught woodwork by one of the housemasters. One day one of the guys in my class was fooling around and the teacher who was noted for his canings sent me to the office of the deputy head to fetch a cane so that he could punish this boy.
Now the boy concerned was a gang leader and someone the rest of us tried to avoid upsetting so I decided to go and hide in the toilets for five minutes and then return to the woodwork class and say the deputy head was not in his room. This I did
