I was angry too – I spent so much time from these kids, fearing a belting – and they got off so lightly. I doubt their school had corporal punishment – it was a private school, so it’s possible but they were a bit more modern than we were – but I was so annoyed and angry that I’d gone through what I’d gone through and they’d got off with detention. And I still had to spend the rest of that year and a half sharing a train station with them (on reflection, they must have been sixteen, or they wouldn’t have been at the school the following year). They left me alone – but they got the little kid to try and steal for them that next year and he did get caught and reported to the school and he did wind up getting the strap.
