At my school (northern England) in the 50’s and 60’s (at least) a half detention could be caned off (one stroke) and a full detention (two strokes) if there was good reason e.g. you had an important sports match, or a dental appointment or whatever. Also if you had the misfortune two get two detentions in one week, then one would be ‘caned off’. Detentions were read out at assembly and if a boy’s name was read out twice, the headmaster or second master would pause for effect, and the whole school would know the outcome! Caning was normally over the trousered seat (as they say) but later on the second master (who did most of the caning) would try and arrange the miscreant’s visit to his study to coincide with p.e. so there was less protection. But I think I have said that before….
