And then of course, there were PE teachers who would pick boys out at random and give them between one and five strokes on any pretext (having your shoelace undone was one I remember.) This was the one time when bare bottom whackings did happen; if you misbehaved in the gym or changing rooms (not on the playing field, of course) then the PE teacher thought nothing about making you drop your shorts — totally pointless since we weren’t allowed underpants and the thin shorts were not much protection. There was one b*stard whose specialty was giving boys who had been slacking in the lesson a stroke of the slipper as they came out of the shower. It must be said, that the PE teachers didn’t whack nearly as hard as the other teachers, although they did it much more often….
