The headmistress would walk round the class doing their sums or writing and every now and then she would send one unlucky boy or girl to the front, they had to standing a line facing the class, then when she had been round the whole class of about 30 she would then one by one smack the backs of each pupils hands, there were usually about 6 – 8 pupils. I was in this line up just the once! I remember thinking at the time that I would have liked to be in that playground game, I was about 9 or 10, in the late 1940’s
