Charles Warrell, ex headmaster created I-SPY books, spotter’s guides written for kids, particularly successful in the 50s and 60s. Kids were encouraged to buy the books, 6p if memory serves, spotting unusual or various everyday objects.

I Spy Spanking was released in the shops in April 1960 and sold in their hundreds, with spotters, boys and girls alike competing for top point whacking/associated entries.

A later version I spy canings was released by Mr Warrell a year later, and included scores for canes, slippers, touch-toe whacking, etc.

Unfortunately, this version was withdrawn from national sale after complaints from the Inner London and other extending education authorities, the exact reason was never disclosed.
