During all of this, the teacher who could not have been out of her early twenties, never once gave any expression of sympathy or comfort, to her it was a job well done. Hurt not just by the caning but also by the injustice of the event, I eventually got over it, until a few weeks later when another incident that did not involve me happened. Another girl in my class who was a notorious bully of younger children, began a fight with another girl in the toilets during which one of the mirrors above the sinks was broken and a girl received serious cuts to her arm which needed stitches when taken to hospital. This notoriously violent incident only merited a good telling off for the offending girl and a letter home to her parents. I know I wasn’t the only boy who felt the sting of injustice at this turn of events.
