As Prof N says in his post about Jimmy Saville, nothing was done at the time, basically because of lack of publicity. It was regarded as just one girl, maybe being a bit overreactive, so no further action was taken. But recently the police and prosecution services have said he was criminally liable at the time, and had they known about the number of instances, they would have taken action against him. If they had; a successful prosecution would have been based of the one case of rape or molestation of one girl presented to the court, not because there were several cases. Several cases would have resulted in several prosecutions, each case based on its own circumstances, NOT prosecuted simply by the large numbers involved.
