As headmaster, Mr Ing would have been well aware there was an enquiry afoot before anyone else. Going on sick leave was a very convenient way of him to avoid answering questions directly. Everyone else would be able to claim it wasn’t me; I did not know anything about that. This would then allow the education authority to sweep the whole lot under the carpet, and regard it as a success, that they could sit on their backsides and did not have to do anything. If all the facts had been known at the time parents could have forced a change by the relevant authority, and a contemporary prosecution for assault may well have been successful.
