The Chief Inspector suspected that Mr Ing had disguised around a hundred severe canings of girls over a decade and the governors were also quite clearly worried that another hundred compensation cases would finish the school off. My husband understood the school’s solicitors had told the governors that every case of a severe caning was tantamount to sexual assault and that if they made a scapegoat of Mr Ing or his Deputy and Senior Master, they would be admitting such a thing had happened and would render themselves liable for allowing it to occur.
