It is worth bringing up this old history now only because some belief may remain, in some minds, in the usefulness of the cane in schools; and there may still be some hitches and delays before the barbarity is finally outlawed. And I hope, also, that my former headmaster may recognize himself and be troubled to think that, when he was in the full strength of his manhood, he struck and injured little boys who had done no wrong. I hope he will be sorry.
